AFC SUDBURY U13 2 CORNARD DYNAMOS U13 REDS 1 The first local derby of the season was as anticipated a hotly contested match with both teams putting in 100% effort in order to gain the first bragging rights of the season. The first half started with a focused AFC side in search of their first league win and It was not long before they stamped their mark on the game. A nice pass from Jake Smith set Nathan Mcgraw on a run down the right his whipped cross was parried by the keeper only for Jack Hurrell to squeeze home. A buoyed AFC continued to press and came close on several more occasions. The AFC defenders looked solid with Adam Shipley and Zac Smith looking in the middle and Kieran Henderson and John Richter in control. Player of the match Kierran Clerkin controlled midfield and continued to dominate through much of the match. The second half started with a flurry of substitutions from AFC and these soon paid off after ten minutes when the ball broke to Tyler Baker who turned and buried a 15 yard shot into the far corner doubling AFCs lead. Cornard pushed hard to get back into the game a on occasions sprung the AFC defence with some clever through balls but the ever dominant Aaron Bean in goal was equal playing a sweeper role behind the defence. Both teams struggled to gain control of the game and Cornard slowly took charge towards the end without really threatening. Out of the blue a Cornard cross was missed by the entire AFC defence and Callum Smith for Cornard finished in style from eight yards out. AFC played keep ball for the last ten minutes creating a few half chances and Cornard were unable to capitalise on their earlier goal. At the final whistle AFC supporters and players went into raptures. Man Of The Match - Kierran Clerkin AFC Sudbury U15 Tigers 4 Ipswich Valley 2 AFC under 15's were back in league action when they hosted a very organized Ipswich Valley side this afternoon at Cornard Sports Centre. AFC started well and had a lot of the early possession and from a good move Richie Abbot headed wide. However after 15 minutes AFC found themselves two nil down as Valley scored twice on the counter attack. Sam Bayliss then headed wide before his curling effort was saved well. Not for the first time this season AFC scored when a Charlie Austin corner was headed in by Tom Wingfield. On the 35 minute AFC were level when Abbot was pushed to the floor in the penalty box giving the referee no option but to award a penalty that Wingfield put in two level the scores. Half Time AFC 2 Ipswich 2 At half time we addressed the basic issue and I asked if we could move the ball quicker and we knew the next goal was to be important. AFC had to defend well and a series off corners where headed away by Harry Liskus or caught by keeper Jamie Williams. AFC still put some good moves together going forward but found the keeper in good form. With 15 minutes to go the re introduction of Abbot from the bench proved to be vital, as twice he drove the ball from the half way line and pinned the Valley defence back. From his third run from inside our half he earned AFC a corner that Austin delivered again to Abbot who put AFC ahead for the first time today. Shortly after another corner saw Harry Fryer finish to seal a hard fought win against a strong side. This win sees AFC extend their lead at the top of Division 1. Someday's you aren't at your best an have to work hard just to compete. To come from two nil down just shows the mental strength off the lads and their will to win. What makes it pleasing is the reaction to our third goal and that showed what it means to the lads to defend their title. Next week we travel to Ipswich to play Valley Rangers again! AFC Sudbury Blues 3 – Little Oakley Blues 0 Sudbury kicked off the game with a little trepidation, as they had not played the visiting team before. Back with a full squad after last week’s absences and injury they got stuck straight in to the Oakley defence with Oscar Edwards running in and having a shot stopped. Alfie Gittings passed well to Edwards and Jack Dyble had a crack at goal, which again was denied by the keeper. Oakley came back, and with some good defending from Eloise King and Cory Willings they managed to keep Oakley on the back foot. Sudbury's pressure saw a Gittings corner knocked into the goal by a player from the visiting team and Sudbury taking the lead. Oakley pushed up again and it was down to King and goalie James McGregor to keep them at bay. Sudbury made a couple of changes and Willings made strong challenges on the Oakley side in both halves of the pitch. James Lavelle made a great shot which just went over the bar. Willings then placed a Sudbury corner to King who netted the ball with a lovely shot putting Sudbury two up for the half time break. Oakley kicked off the second half and saw Toby Mattock being called upon straight away to defend the Sudbury goal. The managers made a couple of more changes to the team and positions of the players and this saw Ben Turner passing well to Willings and King, and Lavelle making strong challenges. Oakley had a few more runs with the ball but the majority of the play was happening in their half and a pass from Lavelle found Gittings whose shot slammed into the visitor’s goal putting Sudbury into a comfortable three goal lead. The home team then tried hard to get another with shots being made by Gittings and Dyble but they could not find the goal again and the second half finished with the home team celebrating another win. Player of the Match: Cory Willings AFC Sudbury Reds 1 – Little Oakley Reds 3 As with the blue team Sudbury reds started the game against a team they had not played before and Peter Shipley got stuck straight in with Ben Cox supporting down the wing. Harry Malone was called upon to defend when Oakley made an attack on goal and keeper George Codling cleared the ball. The visitors put more pressure on and Adam Jeggo helped out well at the back trying to keep the score equal. Jacob Gilbert made a run with ball and passed to Alex Woodward who was stopped in his tracks by the visitors defence. The coaches then made some subs which saw Thomas Drayton and Josh Wood take to the pitch, with Drayton getting straight into the thick of it. Wood had a couple of chances stopped by the strong Oakley defence and the first half finished with neither team scoring. After an equally played first half the game got underway again with some changes to the Sudbury squad. Theo Kurtz put on the goalies shirt and Gilbert and Woodward returned to the pitch. After an Oakley attack the visitors netted the first goal of the game. The home team kept up the pressure with Cox on the wing and Drayton steaming in to the Oakley half and putting the ball just over the bar. Jeggo and Gilbert worked well together and Gilbert had a shot go wide. Malone came back on and Codling took to the pitch as well to help Sudbury try and get the equaliser Gilbert had another shot pushed over the bar, and Oakley took an opportunity and managed to get another goal despite a valiant effort from Kurtz. Sudbury undeterred kept on trying and after a great cross from Malone Gilbert picked up the ball and fired home a great goal to lift the Sudbury spirits. As the game was drawing to a close Oakley managed to sneak a corner straight into the back of the net, and sealing the win. Player of the Match: Thomas Drayton AFC Sudbury U18 Panthers 5 Scole Lads 1 After a recent exodus of players a new look Panthers with four new players in two games made a winning start to their season, after a hard fought game. After dominating the initial opening twenty minutes, Sudbury fell behind to a fluke goal that was a deflected off target shot that wrong footed Aaron Ayres in goal with their first attack. Almost from the restart Dan Livens calmly slotted home after great work on the flank by Tom Wright created the opportunity. Debutant and new team captain Sam Martin caressed the ball effortlessly to the top corner from outside the box for the second , the next goal came shortly after a long directed pass from Ayres leaving Livens to run on one on one with the oncoming keeper for him to slot home his second. Dan Livens collected his well-deserved hat trick almost immediately after stunning footwork by Jack Steed on the right played a simple pass for Livens to tap home. The second half saw Sudbury create more opportunities and better finishing on another day would have seen them stretch the lead further. In the 85th minute hard work prevailed and Ashley Webbs, clever work on the left created an opening for Man of the match Tom Wright to round off his display with a well deserved goal. Sudbury’s defence was well marshalled firstly by George Manning in front of the back four then by the outstanding Thomas George(TJ) and determined Jordan Bailey who was exemplary all game. It was also good to see fellow debutant Charlie Butcher settle nicely in to the team. AFC Sudbury U14 7 v Cornard Dynamos 1 2nd Half and the boys immediately went out and decided to end the match there and then. With only 45 seconds on the clock Cowley fed the ball to Cameron Bailey, who put through Alex Curran to slot the ball under the keeper. As their confidence grew on 2 mins Cowley passed to Curran who put through Marshall to again slot the ball under the keeper. On 7 mins Marshall scored his hattrick; Cowley again assisting in the build-up, lobbed the Cornard defence for Marshall to volley home. AFC's fifth came courtesy of Cowley heading back a goal kick into the path of Curran to volley home. For all his hard effort Cowley too got the goal he rightly deserved. Liam O'Mara put through Cowley to comfortably lob the keeper to make it 6-0. All credit to Cornard though they did not give up and got a deserved goal as they pushed forward and a failed clearance fell to them to finish. On 32 mins Youngs made a dashing run down the right, taking on four opponents before managing to slide the ball across the Cornard 6yd box for Curran to pounce on it and bury the ball home.
