Match Reports Date: 23rd Oct 2011 AFC Sudbury U18 Tigers 3 Walsham le Willows 5
Sudbury having not played for three weeks found themselves starting this match without Goal keeper Ben Tracey and midfielders Luke Nicoll and Dan Smith. With left winger Jack Hubbard filling in for Tracey, Sudburys midfield had a completely new look. Given all of this Sudbury put on an excellent performance, with commitment, spirit and hard work. Sudbury took the lead when good link up on the right between Brandon New and Jake Jackson saw Jackson shoot across the keeper and in to the far corner. Sudbury remained on top for the majority of the half and defended resolutely when required. Just before half time Sudbury conceeded from a corner with a well met header. Injuries and substitutions saw Sudbury change formation and after the break Walsham took the lead with a fortunate goal. Sudbury responded well to equalise after good work by Jackson saw Will Wingfield meet his cross to place the ball wide of the keeper. Sudbury then retook the lead Wingfied releasing Ben Lait who outpaced the defender to then calmly slot home. Walsham playing better in this half threatened constantly and when Sudbury went to 10 men they took advantage to first equalise and then take the lead. A further injury reduced Sudbury to 9 men and Walsham scored their fifth goal. Sudbury again are without football for two weeks, which should hopefully see them back to full strength on the 13th November for the match against Bury Crusaders Friendly AFC Sudbury U15 Tigers 3 Bury Town U16s 2 With no league fixture AFC hosted Bury Town u16's who sit mid table in the Ipswich A league. AFC were missing Ashley Binfield and Harry Fryer who where both unavailable and also Charlie Austin out through injury, However we welcomed Josh Welsford back from Injury and Jon Dale making his Tigers team debut.
AFC nearly took the lead after 5 minutes when Harry Craig a player who is still eligible to play for the Under 14's forced their keeper into a good save. AFC took the lead shortly after when Harry Liskus headed in full back Jack Lewis corner. AFC then sat off the game and allowed Bury more of the ball, but keeper Jamie Williams was not worked. AFC got their second after Sam Bayliss was upended and from 25 yards Tom Wingfield scored the resulting free kick. Bury pulled one back after their forward was fouled inside the box and he dusted himself down to put the penalty away. After a period of keep ball a pass from full back Dale found Wingfield who showed some quality to beat two men and fire in on the half volley. Half time AFC 3 Bury 1 Second half saw AFC attack the Bury goal and Wingfield fired at their keeper and then Abbot brought a good save out of him. Bury pulled a goal back with a fine finish. However AFC back Four stood firm when under pressure and keeper Williams never had another effort to save. AFC then saw the game out by keeping the ball to win 3-2. A good work out against a side who are a year older. We stood up to the physical test and weren't drawn into the number of verbal battles. Also well done to Harry Craig who had a excellent game playing up two years and also to John Dale who played well. Next week AFC host Ipswich Valley in the league Holland on Sea Blues 1 – AFC Sudbury U10 Blues 0 AFC travelled to Holland on Sea expectant of a good hard game and it certainly didn't disappoint. There was pressure from Sudbury from the off with Ben Turner making an excellent run down the wing which resulted in James Lavelle shooting just off the mark. Holland then started to get into the game and apply a little pressure but Cory Willings and Toby Mattock defended strongly. Eloise King hassled hard down the wing and found Alfie Gittings who turned well. The ball bounced in the air and Gittings bravely headed the ball, clashing heads with the Holland defender which led to him being unable to continue. Jack Dyble came on in place and got stuck straight in. There were further great runs by Turner along with tackles by Mattock and Willings. AFC got caught and Holland was in, but player of the match Willings managed to make a last ditch tackle. Just before the end of the half King had a good shot and was unlucky. AFC then got a free kick which Lavelle took and the keeper tipped over the bar for a corner. The start of the second half saw King run down the wing to cross and Turner shoot. At the other end Holland nearly scored after a scramble but James McGregor managed to save on the line. AFC had further chances but couldn't break the deadlock. Holland managed to find some space and shot. The ball was sailing into the top corner and McGregor managed to dive across to make the save of the season. The game was hard fought by both teams and a stroke of luck or mistake was going to settle it. Unfortunately 3 mins before time the ball fell to a Holland player who slotted into the bottom corner. AFC were disappointed by the result and certainly deserved a draw, but cannot be disappointed by their performance. Player of the match: Cory Willings ----- Holland on Sea Reds 8 – AFC Sudbury Reds 0 AFC started strongly but were a bit shocked by an early Holland goal after only a minute. Adam Jeggo was sprightly, making some good clearances and passes. Peter Shipley made a great block along with Jacob Gilbert heading clear. Theo Kurtz made some good saves, especially as this was his first competitive game in goal. Holland continued to press and Jeggo made a brilliantly timed tackle and went on to play some good stuff with Alf Powell. Good blocks and tackling were made by Harry Malone and Shipley. Ben Cox came on for Gilbert and immediately played a nice pass. Alex Woodward controlled the ball well and turned on a sixpence before laying the ball off, but unfortunately AFC couldn't capitalise. Jeggo put a great corner in but nobody got on the end of it. Holland then got a corner and managed to score from it. AFC seemed to drop their heads after this and a minute later Holland toe poked another. Player of the match Shipley made an excellent tackle and continued to battle well along with Cox. Just before half time a cross came and there was an unfortunate own goal. The second half saw Holland score again within a minute and then another a minute later. Gilbert collected the ball and struck the ball with force but it just flew over the bar. Kurtz made another good save but couldn't stop Holland scoring another. Holland scored their last just before the end of paly. AFC showed moments of good play throughout the game but Holland were strong on the day. Player of the match: Peter Shipley |
