Needham respond when their right back was allowed to clip the ball forward that wasn't dealt with and their forward respond to tap home so after 3 minutes the score was 1-1. AFC then had more off the ball and created chances but where guilty off making the wrong choice in possession or the wrong run off the ball. AFC then saw a Bayliss goal disallowed for offside but minutes later took the lead when Richie Abbot skipped two tackles before the center half strongly and fairly halted his progress resulting in a throw. From this a Harry Fryer long throw was headed in by Wingfield for his second. half time 1-2 At half time I spoke about making the correct movements off the ball when our forwards drop in to link our play and the tempo we play at. It took all off two minutes to show this Abbot made the correct movement before skipping by the center half and placing in under the advancing keeper. Harry liskus then linked with Wingfield that allowed him to finish for his hat trick and AFC fourth. The back four arc where now defending well and creating overloads going forward and this allowed Abbot to finish from 20 yards for AFC fifth. We then changed to a 4-2-3-1 formation with John Dale (JD) sitting in with Fryer and Wingfield playing as a number ten. Needham pulled one back with a cross shot in the wind. AFC respond with a frantic bit of play the keeper made a good save before Wingfield smashed the crossbar, Charlie Poole then hit the post and then JD came in to fire in for his first goal for AFC tigers on his second outing. AFC then had a cheeky training ground corner hooked off the line and the boys controlled the tempo off the game to finish off a good performance. full time Needham Market 2 AFC 6 A good performance from all the squad today and this level of performance is something we must deliver week in week out to progress. We spoke about having a possible 14 games left and this level off performance will mean we have a chance off being involved. Every single boy can be pleased with their morning work.
AFC Sudbury U18 Tigers 4 Bury Rangers 0 Sudbury continued their impressive run by taking the notable scalp of Rangers, who prior to this match had lost only twice. The game however will be best remembered for three top drawer strikes, which would have graced any match at any level of the game. Sudbury started brightly and had Rangers on the back foot from the off, an early chance dragged wide, but a sign of things to come. Rangers responded with some neat passing, reminding the home side they were facing a decent footballing side. The first goal saw Luke Nicoll break down the right and hit a fiece cross in to the box, which was diverted by a defender in to his own net. Minutes later Nicoll latched on to Millars through ball and powered a stunning half volley from 20 yards in to the top left corner of the net. Rangers clearly stunned to be two down tried to rally, but found the Sudbury midfield and defence in determined form, with every player battling hard. Another Sudbury attack on the left saw Millar lay the ball off to Nicoll outside the box and he hit a first time 20 yard curling shot in to the far top corner of the net, the keeper motionless and unable to react. In the second half Rangers exerted more pressure, but again rarely troubled Tracey in goal, who when called upon was decisive and alert to any threat. The back four of Payne, Bayly, Jackson and Bayly were fantastic and disiplined and well in control, In the middle Hubbard and Smith dominated, with New out wide causing a constant problem to the Rangers defence. Rangers pressure was soaked up and then Sudbury came back strong and deservedly scored again, Will Wingfield showed great strength to evade a challange, broke and then struck a magnificent 30 yard shot which flew over the head of the keeper and in to the net. The goal deflated the visitors and Sudbury comfortably closed out the game for an important win, which takes them above Rangers and in to 4th place.
Stanway Rovers 3 v AFC Sudbury U10 Blues 1 After the enforced break due to the recent bad weather the second meeting this season of Sudbury and Stanway kicked with Stanway on home turf. The visitors soon settled in and started to really push the ball up the pitch with some excellent passing between James Lavelle and Oscar Edwards down the wing. Both Eloise King in defence and James McGregor in goal made sure that Stanway were denied any chance of scoring an early goal. The pace picked up again and after some great work from Cory Willings and Ben Turner moving the ball into the homes team half Sudbury were rewarded a corner. A fine ball from Lavelle was picked up by Willings who slotted it home to put the visitors one up. Sudbury continued to have the run of play with Alfie Gittings playing a long ball and Turner having a shot denied. McGregor was called upon again a couple of times and made some fine saves. Jack Dyble and Toby Mattock joined the game and both soon got involved in the game, Mattock at the back helping King in defence and Dyble upfront. The first half drew to a close with Sudbury still holding the lead. The second half kicked off and Stanway seemed to have a second win and started to put pressure on Sudbury from the off forcing McGregor again to make a fine save. Mattock was making the right moves in defence and Turner had a great shot just hit the bar. Stanway were awarded a penalty after an unlucky hand ball in the Sudbury goalmouth and despite McGregor’s best efforts Stanway equalised. After some positional changes Sudbury soon got on the attack and Willings had a shot saved. Stanway then had a push on goal and managed to secure their second of the game, to put them in the lead. Gittings worked well at getting the ball up to the midfield where Edwards, Turner and Lavelle all tried to get through so Dyble could strike, but the Stanway defence proved too much and then Sudbury conceded their third goal of the game and despite valiant efforts right up until the final whistle Sudbury just could not get back into the game. Player Of The Match: James McGregor Stanway Rovers 3 – AFC Sudbury U10 Reds 0 Having not played for a couple of weeks Sudbury got off to an enthusiastic start away from home with Jacob Gilbert having an early strike saved. Theo Kurtz was called upon in goal as he picked up a Stanway corner and made the ball safe. As Stanway tried to pressure Sudbury Adam Jeggo in defence kept the ball clear and Ben Cox played the ball down the wing but Sudbury were stopped by a quick Stanway defence. Alf Powell played a great long ball but again Stanway denied any chances Sudbury tried to make .Peter Shipley worked well with Jeggo at the back to stop Stanway and Thomas Drayton was stopped in his tracks by the home team again. A change of players saw Alex Woodward come on and get in on the action, and Gilbert was stopped after a fine long run up the middle of the pitch. After Powell and Cox tried to make a break the home team picked the ball up and managed to beat Kurtz to put them in the lead, and then repeated this minutes later to finish the first half two up. The second half started and the play was back and forth until Stanway managed to steal a third goal. Both Gilbert and Woodward got stuck in and Josh Wood made his presence felt when the ball went deep into the home teams half. After a hard tumble Cox came off and Powell had a shot go wide. Some great passing between Gilbert, Powell and Woodward saw Sudbury push up but again the determined home team denied Sudbury any chance of scoring. Kurtz was called upon again with a great save and Shipley kept strong as well to make sure that that no further goals were scored, and Sudbury still pushed right up to the whistle to get a goal back.
